Following his Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture Spring 2016 presentation that took place at the Hotel Le Meurice, Syrian designer Rami Al Ali, behind is eponymous label, has brought his couture collection back to the Middle East. The Rami Al Ali couture exhibit opened on March 10th and will run for two consecutive weeks at the Rosewood Abu Dhabi hotel.
Intended to offer attendees a first-hand look of the House’s latest couture creations, the exhibition was erected in the Majlis lounge—notable for its high-ceilings, tall windows, and glittering crystal chandeliers—which serves as a backdrop for the showcase featured on scaffold-like platforms.
In a powdery palette of blue, gray, and peach, and punctuated with royal blue, the ornate yet contemporary gowns feature sculptured hips, while others are fluid with gathered folds. Speaking about the inspiration, Al Ali shared with Style.com/Arabia,“I was inspired by decorative Moorish artistry, and manipulated the historic accents with masquerade-inspired silhouettes to create a juxtaposition of the two contrasting periods.” He further added, “It is Moorish detailing with ‘50s silhouettes.”
While Rami Al Ali is based in Dubai, he revealed the reason behind taking his collection to Abu Dhabi, “It’s a collaboration between the Rami Al Ali House and Rosewood Abu Dhabi. The similarity of both brands’ ethos led to this wonderful partnership.” Relishing on the collaboration, he described that he is also optimistic about expanding the partnership, “Rosewood has done a similar collaboration withVera Wang in New York. We are excited to start in the Middle East and possibly extend this collaboration to other Rosewood hotels around the world.”
The showcase marks a notable return to the region. Since the House’s launch in 2000, and prior to the Rami Al Ali Alta Moda debut in 2009, which has been followed by presentations during Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture, the House unveiled its collections in the Middle East. “It really feels perfect to showcase again now in the Middle East,” Al Ali explained. “And to celebrate my design career in the country that has shown so much warmth and continuous support since I started my design journey.”
